The use of azelaic acid is quite common in skin care, and then there are users who feel that the skin has a burning appearance after use. Why is this?

Gaiazelaic acid has a certain irritation. Its molecular structure and properties may interact with the keratinocytes and nerve endings on the surface of the skin. If the stratum corneum of the skin is already weak, or its protective function is damaged due to excessive cleaning and exfoliation in the early stage, when encountering azelaic acid, acids easily penetrate the stratum corneum, touch the internal nerve endings, cause nerve impulses to be transmitted, and make the skin feel burning.

Furthermore, the tolerance of individual skin varies greatly. Some people have strong skin tolerance and can adapt to azelaic acid; however, those with weak tolerance, even with normal concentrations of azelaic acid, may also cause discomfort. This is because the barrier function and nerve sensitivity of different individuals' skin are different. Sensitive skin has more sensitive nerve endings and a stronger response to azelaic acid stimulation.

In addition, improper use is also an incentive. If the amount of azelaic acid is applied too much or not evenly pushed away, the concentration of acid on the local skin is too high, which will increase the burning sensation. And if used in combination with other irritating skin care products, such as high concentrations of salicylic acid, retinol, etc., the superposition of the two irritations can also easily cause skin discomfort and produce burning phenomenon.

To reduce the burning sensation of azelaic acid, the user should first test the sensitivity and try it behind the ear or on a small piece of skin.
