Azelaic Acid Keratosis Pilaris

Azelaic acid in the treatment of periceratosis

Periceratosis
is a common skin disease, mostly due to genetics, vitamin A deficiency, metabolic disorders and other factors. Its symptoms are often dense small papules on the surface of the skin, like chicken skin, which are more likely to occur on the outside of the upper arm, the side of the thigh and other parts. Although there is no serious health threat, it has an impact on the appearance and psychology of patients.

Azelaic acid, as a natural dicarboxylic acid, has attracted much attention in the field of skin disease treatment, and also has a significant effect on periceratosis.

From the perspective of the mechanism of action, first, azelaic acid can inhibit excessive proliferation and keratosis of keratinocytes. The pathological basis of pericarpal keratosis is abnormal keratosis of the hair follicle mouth and the formation of keratin suppositories. Azelaic acid can adjust the differentiation process of keratinocytes, restore normal keratosis, reduce the accumulation of keratin suppositories, and relieve the symptoms of papules. Second, azelaic acid has anti-inflammatory properties. The local skin of this disease is often accompanied by a slight inflammatory reaction. Azelaic acid can inhibit the release of inflammatory mediators, reduce inflammation, and improve the feeling of redness, swelling and discomfort of the skin. Third, azelaic acid may inhibit the growth of microorganisms such as Propionibacterium acne. Although pericarcinosis is not caused by the main cause of bacterial infection, the imbalance of the skin microbial community may have an impact, and the inhibitory effect of azelaic acid on microorganisms may indirectly help the disease

In clinical application, the preparation containing azelaic acid is used to treat pericarcinosis. The common concentration is 15% - 20% azelaic acid cream. Generally, it is used externally 1-2 times a day, evenly applied to the affected area, and gently massaged to help absorption. At the initial use, some patients may have slight irritation to the skin, such as itching, tingling, redness, etc. This is mostly normal. With the extension of use time, the skin gradually tolerates, and the irritation symptoms can often be relieved or disappeared. If the irritation symptoms are serious, the use should be suspended and a doctor should be consulted.

Usually after several weeks of continuous use, the skin symptoms can be seen to improve. The number of pimples decreases, the volume becomes smaller, and the skin roughness decreases and becomes smoother. However, it should be noted that pericarcinoma is difficult to be completely cured. Even after the symptoms improve, maintenance treatment is required to consolidate the curative effect and prevent recurrence.

In addition to the use of azelaic acid, daily skin care is also essential. Patients should pay attention to skin moisturization, and choose gentle moisturizing skin care products to maintain skin moisture and improve skin barrier function. At the same time, avoid over-cleansing the skin, do not bathe with overheated water, and do not rub hard to avoid damaging the skin barrier and aggravating symptoms.

To sum up, azelaic acid is an effective means to treat pericarcinoma. Combined with good skin care, it can significantly improve the quality of life of patients. However, the specific treatment plan should be followed by patients to achieve the best treatment effect.
